Whale Shark Watch
Who we are
Whale Shark Watch is an organisation of concerned individuals which hopes to learn more about the whale sharks on the Elephant coast.
Our main focus is collecting accurate sustainable year round data on our local whale shark population.
What we do
Typically we send a microlight aircraft up to spot the large sharks, and then launch a boat to complete an in depth assessment on each animal spotted.
The size is recorded and in-water photographs are taken to submit to our whales shark photo ID data base.
The direction of travel is noted as well as the gender and any distinguishing marks or features.
Our experiences focus heavily on the research and educational aspect of the largest fish in our seas and the groups we take out, help to fund the ongoing research.
Join us and find out more about these gentle giants.
What we offer
Whale Shark Watch offers aerial and boat based viewing experiences.
We have a dedicated boat with attached viewing chair to facilitate quality interactions.
Whale Sharks tend to spend a lot of their time on the surface, so most of the interactions are snorkel based and there is no need for scuba diving qualifications.
We use the services of a local microlight pilot to conduct the aerial surveys.
