Sangoma (Fortune teller and Trafitional healer)
-
The Sangoma is a person chosen by his/her ancestors to be the fortune teller and healer of a village. - He or she works with the spirits of their forefather's, and they are called by their ancestors in dreams and voices.
- Once the person has been called, they must go for training to become a real sangoma.
- The traditional Sangoma training takes one to two years and one or more cows and goats are required as payment for the training.
- The Sangoma's culturally respect and remember their ancestors (Amadlozi) but they don't worship them.
They also perform Zulu-Sangoma traditional dancing.- They were of utmost importance from the 19th century to the earliest kings of the Zulu nation.
- During war time, they were used to immunise the warriors from harm and would also predict the outcome of the battles.
- In the present day many people still seek Sangoma's for advice and guidance.
