Malaria

Sodwana Bay is located in an intermediate malaria risk area.
People at risk should take extra precautions

People at risk include:
  • children under 5
  • adults over 65
  • pregnant women
  • people with compromised immune systems

Precautions
  • Take care between and dusk dawn.
  • apply insect repellent to exposed skin
  • if possible remain indoors
  • close windows and doors at night
  • spray an aerosol insecticide
  • burn mosquito coils and mosquito mats
  • sleep under a mosquito net
  • wear long-sleeved clothing, long trousers and socks if outdoors after dark

Malaria Prophylactics

Consult a physician to determine the best type of prophylactic to take as mosquitoes can become resistant to certain medications.
If you do take malaria prophylaxis, it is important to follow the instructions correctly.

After Travelling

It is possible for a person to contract malaria even though all precautionary measures have been taken.

If any flu-like symptoms such as headache, fever, muscular and joint pains, sweating, shivering and nausea occur after a visit to a malaria risk area consult a doctor immediately and advise the doctor of your visit to the malaria area.

Malaria attacks can occur up to six months after leaving a malaria area.
